National Youth Orchestra of Wales in Concert 2019
August 3 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Welcome to the 2019 National Youth Orchestra of Wales concert series. Following their recent intensive and rewarding skills and rehearsal residency, our members – Wales’ most talented young Orchestral musicians – proudly present tonight’s performance. We all look forward to witnessing their musical talents in three spectacular performances taking place in Bangor, Cardiff and the majestic St David’s Cathedral as part of the Fishguard International Music Festival.
This year we welcome the internationally acclaimed American Conductor, Andrew Litton, to Wales. Andrew is no stranger to these shores having been Principal Conductor with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for several years and is a regular guest conductor with many UK orchestras, including our very own BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
As a native New Yorker, it’s no surprise that the US is represented in this year’s programme with Copland’s The Tender Land Suite accompanying Grace Williams’ much-loved Fantasia on Welsh Nursery Tunes. Both pieces represent their respective countries perfectly and the same can be said of Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony, a piece written shortly after Stalin’s death and said to be a commentary on Stalin’s years in power and of the man himself.
Thank you for supporting National Youth Orchestra of Wales and we do hope you enjoy tonight’s concert.
