National Youth Arts Wales (NYAW) leads Creative Futures - a ground-breaking project that inspires, supports and elevates young creatives throughout Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent. Built around creativity, representation and opportunity, Creative Futures gives young people the space, skills and confidence to shape their own artistic practice within local communities.
Creative Futures brings together emerging artists aged 10-18 from six areas in Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent. The project delivers practical creative experiences, industry-led sessions, mentoring and pathways into professional arts environments. Delivered in partnership with local arts organisations, community centres and schools, the pilot project ensures that young people can access high-quality opportunities close to home and actively engage with their communities.
From Autumn 2025 through Spring 2026, participants take part in weekly 2-hour workshops led by leading professionals in dance, music and the creative industries.
These sessions allow young people to explore creativity across multiple art forms:
Singing & Songwriting – Writing original songs, experimenting with vocals, and collaborating with other young creatives.
Music Production – Recording, mixing, and producing tracks using industry-standard techniques and tools.
Dance & Choreography – Developing dance technique, creating original routines, and performing with guidance from expert dancers.
Wellbeing & Creative Skills – Engaging in activities that boost confidence, teamwork, and creative thinking.
This programme is important
Access to high-quality arts opportunities is limited in many parts of Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent, with fewer local resources, facilities or programmes than larger cities.
For young people in these areas, Creative Futures is vitally important because it:
Provides opportunities to discover and develop creative talents that may otherwise go unnoticed.
Offers mentorship and guidance from industry professionals, which is often harder to access in areas with fewer arts organisations.
Creates safe and inclusive spaces where young people can express themselves, collaborate with peers, and build confidence.
Connects participants to local networks and cultural communities, helping them see a pathway into creative industries without needing to leave their area.
Strengthens community identity and pride, showing young people that their creativity is valued and that their voices matter.
By taking workshops directly into local communities, the project removes barriers, strengthens local creative networks and prioritises accessibility, inclusivity and youth voice.
