GIVE TO OUR BURSARY FUND
At National Youth Arts Wales (NYAW), we believe that every young person should have the opportunity to explore and develop their creative potential, regardless of their financial circumstances. Our bursary programme is central to this mission, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to participation in our national ensembles and development programmes in music, theatre, and dance.
Each year, bursaries help young people cover fees, travel, accommodation, instruments and other costs associated with training and performance. In 2025, 61% of NYAW members (166 young people) received bursary support, including 95 full bursaries, with a total of £81,627 awarded. These bursaries allow talented young people from across Wales — including rural areas, low-income households and under-represented communities — to take part in intensive residencies, workshops and performances that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Bursaries are about more than financial support. They provide young people with:
Access to high-quality training with professional tutors and mentors.
Opportunities to perform on professional stages, often for the first time.
A sense of belonging and confidence, developing teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
Pathways into higher education and professional arts careers.
“Without the bursary, I couldn’t have joined the Choir. Being part of NYAW has grown my confidence, my skills and my love of music — and I’ve made friends I’ll keep for life.”
— Danielle Gorle, National Youth Choir of Wales
Our bursary programme is embedded across all areas of NYAW’s work, from flagship ensembles like the National Youth Orchestra, Brass Band and Choir of Wales, to theatre and dance training, and local development projects such as Côr Skills and Creative Futures. In some programmes, up to 70% of participants rely on bursary support, highlighting the essential role bursaries play in making youth arts accessible to all.
By providing this support, NYAW ensures that every young person - regardless of background or circumstances - can participate, learn and thrive. Bursaries help us reach more young people, nurture emerging talent, and contribute to an inclusive and vibrant arts landscape across Wales.
