Strings Attached
Inspiring Young String Players Across Wales
The Strings Attached programme brings together young string players and peer mentors from throughout Wales for a series of intensive two-day orchestral residencies. Delivered by National Youth Arts Wales (NYAW) in partnership with local music services, the project provides high-quality ensemble training, mentorship and insight into auditioning for national music ensembles.
Participants rehearse a range of challenging string repertoire while developing ensemble techniques, orchestral skills and confidence. They are supported by professional tutors and NYOW peer mentors, who share their own experiences and guidance. Each residency concludes with a short performance for family and friends, celebrating the hard work and progress of all participants.
Recent Locations
South Wales (Cardiff, Oct 2024): 52 participants, 5 peer mentors
West Wales (Carmarthen, Feb 2025): 58 participants, 6 peer mentors
North Wales (Wrexham, Jul 2025): 23 participants, 5 peer mentors
The residencies give young string players the rare opportunity to work at a high level in a dedicated string orchestra setting, helping to bridge the gap between regional music services and national ensembles.
